• In the Prologue, the body of Chase Andrews lay in the swamp on the morning of October 30, 1969.

• In Chapter 1 it was August 1952 and Catherine “Kya” Clark, was six years old.

• She lived in a shack in the marsh with her four older siblings and her parents.

• One morning Kya’s mother left the shack wearing high heels and carrying a train case.

• No one mentioned Ma’s departure, but Kya spent her days sitting on the steps waiting for her mother to return.

• The area where the Clarks lived was a mean country first settled in the 1500s.

• It was a place where someone set up a lean-to in the bog if he was on the run or at the end...
