Hole

This object symbolizes an unsettling lack of control. When Lizzie passes the school playground and sees that this object has yet to be fixed, she feels a shudder pass through her at the thought of the dangers associated with it. This object became a project for Lizzie and a few others, but they have still been unable to do anything about it due to the level of bureaucracy within the district.

Shard of Glass

This object and others like it symbolize a focus on tradition. Lizzie tells the reader at one point that she had only found out long after her wedding that the couple was supposed to keep this object and the others like it after the traditional Jewish ceremony. It is through Lizzie's discussion of this topic that the reader learns that Ben is Jewish, while Lizzie grew up in the Catholic faith.
