Chapter One

• The novel’s epigraph is placed on page 12 and the quote is taken from the transcript of a town meeting in a settlement in Connecticut in the late seventeenth century.

• The quote from the transcript sees the settlers using circular logic in order to declare themselves owners of the land by first declaring that the Bible says that the earth belongs to the saints, and then by declaring themselves to be saints.

• Chapter One begins on page 15.
