Lesson 1 (from Part One: Chapters I through III)

Objective

The Communist Revolution was the start of massive changes for Russia. In "We the Living" all the characters are consumed, influenced, and driven by Communism - either in support of it, or in disdain for it.

The objective of this lesson is to introduce students to Communism so they can consider how it impacts the characters of this novel.

Lesson

1) Small group activity: Students break into groups. Each group must make a list of things they see wrong with their society, then they must brainstorm possible solutions. Students will share their plans with the class and then the teacher will offer a solution in the ideals of communism. Groups should meet again and make a list of pros and cons as to how communism could help their social problems.
