• Prior to the Title Page, the author inserts a quote from Plate that declares, " ...it is necessary to bind him, as it were, with many chains," referring to the manner in which boys need to be managed.

• Chapter 1, WE WANTED MORE

• The unnamed narrator, a seven-year old boy, begins the novel by providing an overall account of how his family, mostly he and his two brothers, spend their days.

• The narrator describes how he and his two brothers are always "wanting more" by living in constant movement, mayhem, and exploration.

• The reader is introduced to the narrator's brothers, Manny and Joel, and recounts how the three brothers fight over everything: boots, garage tools, snapping pliers, and dishes...
