Objective

Students will investigate the genre of the definition essay and will use their newfound understanding of the genre's qualities to analyze more deeply the themes and messages within the work.

In many ways, the most prominent feature of Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's essay We Should All Be Feminists is its status as a definition essay. The essay seeks to (re)define the word feminism and to reshape the ways in which the reader understands the word and concept. The author seeks to dispel the negative connotations and myths surrounding the term and to encourage everyone, no matter their gender, to embrace its use and ideals. By studying the essay within the framework of its status as a definition essay, students will come to understand both the genre of the definition essay and this particular essay in a more complex way.
