Objective

The students will understand the connection between the poems in Part I. The poems in Part I primarily focus on the power and powerlessness of mankind as well as the role of celestial beings on the world.

Lesson

Class Discussion: Have the students answer the following questions: What is the subject matter of each poem in Part I? Who are the characters in each poem? What might be the purpose of each poem?

Small Group Activity: Have the students split into small groups and choose one poem on which to focus. They should then answer the following questions: Which poem did you choose? What is the tone of the poem? What aspects of the poem set the tone? What might be the meaning of the poem? What deeper meanings can be found? What might the poet want the reader to take away from this poem?
