1. Describe the movie that Martha references at the beginning of the play.

Martha says "What a dump!" on the way in the door. She says the line is from a Bette Davis movie made by Warner Bothers. As she tries to think of the title, she mentions that Joseph Cotten is also in the film.

2. Describe George.

George is a sullen and sardonic professor of history. He is married to Martha, and although he is six years younger than she, he seems much older.

3. What is Martha's plan for the rest of the night, and why aren't she and George going to bed?

Martha has invited Nick and Honey, a young professor and his wife, for drinks at the house. Martha's father, the chair of George's department, said that they should entertain the new professor. Martha evidently took this to mean that they should invite them over after the college social.
