Objective

Zoyd Wheeler is collecting a monthly federal stipend of mental health benefits, and to continue to qualify, he must perform one yearly, public display of craziness.

The objective of this lesson is to examine the criteria used by the government to qualify for various benefits.

Lesson

1) Initiate a class discussion on the topic of government benefits. Which benefits are most often abused or collected by those who don't really qualify, like Zoyd? How does that impact the government funding available?

2) Break the class into groups of three or four and debate the issue of qualification for benefits. Should regulations or qualifications for benefits be more strictly monitored? Why or why not?

3) In short essay form, select one government benefit available today. Research the qualifications necessary to collect these benefits. How difficult would it be to falsify these parameters? How often are these criteria reviewed?
