Part I (Prologue - Chapter 2)

• This book was written in a mix of present and past tenses and from the first person perspective.

• In the Prologue, Deborah Feldman is 24 years old and has recently left the Hasidic Orthodox Jewish Satmar community of her upbringing in Williamsburg New York.

• Feldman's mother, Rachel Levy, was originally born in England and brought to the United States through a matchmaking process in order to marry her father, Shia.

• Shia was a son of Feldman's grandparents who was very old to be unmarried in the Satmar community. Feldman speaks about her father as if he is developmentally impaired.
