Objective

Objective: James seems to be a bit of a moocher when the story opens, having lived with someone with whom he is not romantically involved, though he never paid rent. Today's objective is to discuss what students think of people who take from others without giving in return.

1. Have each student make a list of the things James should have done in exchange for staying with Magdalen.

2. In smaller groups, have students discuss whether they would be comfortable staying with someone without paying them rent. Why or why not?

3. As a class, have the students discuss who is at greater fault for the situation with James. Is James at fault for not paying rent, or is Magdalen at fault for never asking for rent? Why do the students choose the answers they do?
