Objective

“Two Kinds” is a short story by author Amy Tan. Included in the collection The Joy Luck Club, the story centers on common themes of mother-daughter relationships, struggles for identity within Asian-American society, and the American Dream. In this lesson, students will research author Amy Tan and The Joy Luck Club, and will identify and discuss the genre and tone established in the opening of “Two Kinds.”
