Laura

This character is the protagonist of the novel and has just turned 12 years old when she begins to record her thoughts in the diary she receives for her birthday. She is a high school student who is popular with her peers, though she feels that none of them know her as well as they think they do. This character is not averse to taking risks and as the narrative moves forward in time, she becomes more and more adventurous, eventually engaging in very risky and dangerous behaviors, likely fueled by the sexual abuse to which she has been subjected from a young age.

Donna

This character is main character's best friend and is more tentative about taking risks than is the main character. She is interested in boys and has a silly sense of humor that makes her a lot of fun to be around.
