Listen to and Contextualize a Song About 1999

In 1982, Prince wrote a song called "1999." He wasn't concerned about the computer crisis that Eisenberg's story opens with, but about a different kind of crisis that is very much related to the overall theme of Eisenberg's story. Listen to the song online and read its lyric sheet (also available online.) Then, do a little reading about the song and the times in which Prince wrote it. Write a three-paragraph response. In your first paragraph, give your personal reaction to the song. In the second paragraph, explain the cultural and political concerns that the song gives voice to. In your final paragraph, explain the relationship of these ideas to the ideas in Eisenberg's story.
