TRUTH & BEAUTY by Ann Patchett was about the friendship of Ann Patchett and Lucy Grealy. They started out as two struggling writers trying to become famous. They endured the hardships of life and the successes of being famous writers until Lucy's death in 2002.

2. Why was Ann Patchett looking for an apartment in Iowa City, Iowa, in 1985?

In Chapter 1, in June, 1985, Ann Patchett, as a twenty-one year-old recent graduate of Sarah Lawrence College, went to find an apartment she could afford in Iowa City, Iowa. She would be there for two years to attend the prestigious Iowa Writers' Workshop and receive Master's in creative writing.

3. How did Ann come to know Lucy Grealy, and what circumstances made them roommates in Iowa?

In Iowa City, Ann was also looking for another apartment for another Sarah Lawrence College graduate called Lucy Grealy. Lucy was famous at Sarah Lawrence because of her great writing and disfigured face. Ann was always in awe of Lucy. She tried to talk with her once, but Lucy just walked away. Lucy wrote her and asked if she would look for an apartment for her, too. Ann found an apartment on Governor Street that was modest and cheap. They both could afford it, if they were roommates.
