Objective

True Grit is a novel by American author Charles Portis. First published as a serial in 1968 in The Saturday Evening Post, the novel tells the story of Mattie Ross, a fourteen-year-old girl who sets out to avenge her father’s murder. True Grit has been adapted to film twice, in a 1969 movie starring John Wayne, and later in a 2010 adaptation starring Jeff Bridges. In this lesson, students will research author Charles Portis and will identify and discuss the structure and genre of True Grit.
