Objective

The title of the novella was taken from the legend of Tristan and Isolde. Compare and contrast the novella with the legendary story to better understand Thomas Mann’s work.

Class Discussion – What is the legend of Tristan and Isolde about? What are the details of the story? What region of the world does it come from? During what era does it take place? How does the legend compare to Mann’s novella? How does Mr. Spinell compare his relationship with Gabriele to the legend of Tristan and Isolde?

Activity – Find and read different retellings of the legend of Tristan and Isolde.

Assignment – Compare and contrast two different versions of the legend. What similarities exist? What differences exist? Which version has more in common with Mann’s novella?
