Treasure Island is in the adventure genre. The objective of this lesson is to learn about genre through the adventure characteristics of Treasure Island.

Lesson

Class Discussion: What is genre? How is it used in literature? How is it identified? What are some common literary genres? What are their characteristics?

Activity: Divide the students into groups of three or four. Have each group address the following. What genre is Treasure Island? What characteristics of this genre can be seen in the story? Does the story also contain characteristics of other genres? If so, which one(s)? When they have finished, discuss their answers as a class.
