The Cadence of Joyce
Many sections of the play are spoken in the sing-song vernacular of much of Joyce's writing. As a class, read some excerpts from Joyce's writing: Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, The Dubliners, the early chapters of Ulysses.
At least in some respect, all artists long to provoke in some way. As a class, review the work of some particularly incendiary artists in recent years: Francis Bacon, Andy Warhol, Damien Hirst, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Paul McCarthy. Was it their art that infuriates people, or their personalities?
