Anne is the child of atheists but likes attending church when other people take her. The objective of this lesson is to understand atheism.

Lesson

Lead the class in a discussion about atheism. Begin with a definition of the word. Ask the students for their perspectives on atheism. Do the students know of any atheists? What can they say about any differences in their beliefs? How tolerant do they think the world is to people who have different beliefs?

Divide the class into two sides and conduct a debate of Christians vs. atheists. There may be Christian students who will have to adopt an atheist point of view for the exercise so allow some research time beforehand for students.

For homework, have the students research famous atheists throughout history and have them write a paper on one of them.
