Lesson 1 (from Chapter 1)
Readers can learn about a book by "interviewing" it before reading the text itself. This lesson's objective is to see what can be learned from the title, the cover photo, the chronology, the foreword, and the preface to To the Storm.
1) Partner Discussion: Where is Yue Daiyun pictured on the cover? Check the photos at the center of the text if you can't find the information. What is the significance of that time and place? What is your impression of her posture and facial expression? What do these things tell you about her?
2) Class Discussion: What words in the cover blurbs catch your attention? Notice "terrifying," "poignant," "painful," etc. Notice who wrote the cover endorsements. What do these blurbs tell you that the book is likely to contain? What does the Bolshevik Salute tell you about the purpose and objectives of this book?
