Ayers begins To Teach: The Journey of a Teacher with a quote from Martha Gellhorn. Gellhorn believes that no matter where people live, they love their children, and want the best for them. This lesson will focus on Gellhorn's writing and her beliefs regarding the education of children.

Lesson

1) Class Discussion: Discuss the differences in the children Gellhorn was referencing in her article, but the love for the children remained the same. What countries were the children from? What was different about the children's parents and the dreams they had for their children? How was the love of children the same no matter where the children lived?

2) Partner Activity: Research the country of Vietnam. Compare the children of the U.S. and Vietnam.
