Objective

Objective: In Act 1, Scene 1, there is immediate antagonism between the lawyer and the Cardinal that goes much deeper than their lifelong acquaintance, although some of the hostility may have to do with the division of Church and State, as evidenced by each man challenging the other's life purpose and choice of career. This lesson will discuss their relationship, based on this first scene.

1) Class Discussion: Describe the interaction between the lawyer and the Cardinal.

Small Group Activity: What does this say about their relationship? Why might their relationship be the way it is?

Class Discussion: Share the groups' thoughts about the lawyer and Cardinal's relationship. What might have happened in the past to lead to this extreme dislike of one another?
