Objective

Jim Prideaux arrives at Thursgood's school and immediately makes an impression on everyone. This lesson will look at the reactions Jim's arrival causes from students and teachers.

Lesson

1) Class Discussion: How do the students at the school receive Jim? What is the significance of their hunt for a nickname for him? Why is it important that the boys seem to like their new teacher? What characteristics do they admire about him?

2) In-Class Writing: Write an essay of a few paragraphs about Bill Roach's reaction to Jim. How are Bill and Jim alike? Why do you think Bill tries so hard to please Jim? Why is Jim so nice to Bill? What do they see in each other?

3) Small Group Discussion: Divide the class into four groups to discuss how the other teachers and Mr. Thursgood react to Jim. What are the opinions they give about him...
