Anfisa - The old governess who has been with her employer's family for thirty years, this character is worried that she will be turned out on her own in her old age. In the end, when all are going their separate ways, it is only this character who seems happy about the future she is to live in a government apartment with one of her girls and she asks nothing more of life.

Ivan Romanovich Chebutykin - An old friend of the sisters, a military doctor, a failure, an alcoholic who laments his patients who have died. He lives in the basement of the house.
