1. In the Prologue, how did Julie describe her life?

Julie described her life as good and complete. She was a wife, a mother, a daughter, a sister, a friend, an immigrant, a cancer patient, a lawyer, and at the end a lawyer. She may have hurt people along the way, but she tried her best to live a full rewarding life. She sought to deal with the inevitable life trials with grace and to emerge with her sense of humor and love for life intact. Even though she was dying in her early 40s and leaving her beloved children behind, she was happy.

2. Where and when was Julie born?

Julie was born in Tam Ky, Vietnam. She was born in January, 1976 and she weighed between six and seven pounds. Hospitals were filthy and cesareans were not an option, so she was born at hope. She was named Lijing, which means "Quintessence of Jasmine" (5).
