The students have done a little reading in the book and might be wondering what type of book this is: a text book, a history book, a fiction book? This lesson will focus on the differences between the various types of books and ask students to identify why this book would fall into the history or biography category. The class will also discuss the meaning and importance of genre.

1. Divide the class into small groups. Have each small group make a list of different types of books they know. Then share the lists with the class and create a master list of book genres.
