Lesson 1 (from Chapters 1-5)

Objective

The objective of this lesson is for students to explore the exposition of the novel. Students will identify and analyze elements from the first five chapters in order to understand and the main characters, the setting, and any potential conflicts the novel might contain.

The first few chapters of the novel introduce the reader to Owen and Bethany. The reader is introduced to Bethany’s powers as well as settings such as the school and the library. Finally, readers are introduced to potential conflicts, such as Owen’s desire to enter books against Bethany’s desire for secrecy, and Bethany’s quest to find her father against her mother’s prohibition from entering books again.
