1. What is the view from Cal's place in the evening in Chapter 1?

It is a cool September evening, but it is cloudy and there is no trace of a sunset. The sky is various shades of gray and goes on forever like the fields in their shades of green. The fields are divided by sprawling hedges, dry-stone walls, and a narrow back road. Toward the north, there is a line of low mountains along the horizon.

2. How is Cal getting along in his new place?

When Cal arrived, he was ready for folks to close ranks against the stranger. Instead, people are neighborly. The day Cal arrived, Mart wandered down to see what he was doing and later brought a mini-fridge and recommended a building supplies store. Noreen, the shopkeeper, explained who was related to who and started halfway joking to set Cal up with her widowed sister. The old guys who seem to live in the pub moved from nods to weather comments to explanations of a sport called hurling. Cal feels like he may not have been welcomed with open arms, but he has been accepted.
