Objective

The Puritan Dilemma: The Story of John Winthrop is a biography of John Winthrop that also relates the events that led to the Puritan colonization of America and the struggles the colonists faced in their early years. Chapter 1: “The Taming of the Heart” begins by introducing John Winthrop and discussing his childhood, early adulthood and education. In this lesson, students will research London, England, in the late 1500s and will discuss the history of the Winthrop family and the childhood and education of John Winthrop.

Research Activity: Conduct research on the social, economic, political, religious and cultural atmospheres of London, England, in the late 1500s. Who was the reigning monarch in England when John Winthrop was born? What was England’s official religion? What was the relationship between the church and state in England?
