Lesson 1 (from Part I (Pages 1 - 67))

Objective

The objective of this lesson is for students to analyze some of Ricky's memories and feelings before he dies in Part I. Ricky has left the reservation after his younger brother Cheeto dies of a drug overdose. Ricky moves to Williston, North Dakota for work, but he is isolated and getting drunk alone in a rural bar when he encounters the Elk Spirit and the elk herd, and then the violent white men who mistakenly think he has wrecked their cars.
