Statistical Charts and Graphs
Author Michelle Alexander cites a number of statistics for incarceration rates in the U.S. in The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness. Develop a chart or graph that further illustrates the author's points in the book.
Give students the opportunity to visit a prison and/or to watch a documentary in class that addresses the circumstances of prisoners in the U.S. After the experience, have students write about their observations.
Develop a map that indicates federal prisons and their locations in the U.S. today versus prior to 1980.
Look in your local newspaper or archives for an article that involves some aspect of the book and bring it to class. You will present it in front of the class and discuss how it relates to the book.
