Objective

The first characters introduced in the novel are Mike and Davis. The objective of this lesson is to examine what we know about the relationship between these two characters.

Lesson

1) In-class group work: Divide the class into groups of 3 or 4 and have them answer this question: Is it odd that Mike and Davis become friends so quickly, considering their differences? Why do you think the author made this decision?

2) In-class discussion: Discuss the answers each group provided for the group work topic. Also, have students discuss these additional questions: What is Davis' background? What is his family history? What does this tell you about his character? What about Mike's background? What do we know so far about his character? How do you think the relationship between these characters will develop?
