1. Describe the town of Paltryville.

Paltryville is a very dull town. It consists of a single street which is lined with newspapers, rather than the usual trees. The town features no major attractions, but it does have a strange building with an eye on it.

2. Describe Mr. Poe's relationship with the children.

Mr. Poe is the temporary custodian of the children, as the story opens. He brings them to Paltryville, where they are going to meet their new guardian. Then he leaves them alone and frightened and they must find their way to the lumbermill in town on their own.

3. Describe the three children, briefly.

Violet is an inventor and often ties a ribbon around her head to think. Klaus is more of an intellectual and wonders about what mosses are in the forest. Meanwhile, Sunny, the youngest, has the strange characteristic of enjoying biting various things with her extra strong teeth, which could come in handy later in the story.
