To understand The Memory Palace of Matteo Ricci by Jonathan D. Spence, the students needs to understand the period of time in which Ricci lived. The objective of this lesson is to provide historical background on the book by discussing the Renaissance and its effect on all aspects of life in Europe and Asia.

Lesson

1) Small Group Activity: Break the class into groups of three or four, creating enough groups to research these topics as they relate to the Renaissance: art, literature, religion, politics, exploration, education, science, inventions. Each group prepares its information to present to the class for discussion. Each group should make a handout for their classmates from the information they compile.
