Hold a mock Salon

Students will bring to class drawings or paintings they have done at home. The pictures will be displayed without giving the "artist's" name. The class will act as a committee to approve or reject a picture for the Salon. Make it fun.

Show Paris

Make copies of pictures of Paris landmarks to display on the wall of the classroom.

Cast the movie

Have a round robin discussion to select current actors to play the different roles in a movie of THE MASTERPIECE.

Look up artists who were contemporary with Zola and find reproductions of their paintings to display in the classroom. Especially include samples of Paul Cézanne's paintings.

The issue of the debate is: Resolved that Claude Lantier was truly a great artist. Students will be assigned opposing sides of the question by random drawing.
