This character is a reporter for a newspaper called The Backwoodsman. This character meets the other two main characters in the story when he is traveling by train. He then encounters the men again when they come to the newspaper office to peruse maps and other texts in preparation for their journey to Kafiristan.

Carnehan

This character is described as having very thick, dark, and bushy eyebrows. This character is a shell of his former self by the end of his adventures in Kafiristan. He was nailed between two pine trees by the people he and his partner had wronged, and when this character was still alive after a day, he was released.
