Objective

Objective: The Lover begins with a narrator in about her seventies who begins to tell a story of when she was young and beautiful. Although the narrator remains nameless throughout the novel, she claims to be the author of the text and most believe that the novel is an autobiography. The objective of this lesson is to learn more about the author and her life and to learn more about the genre of autobiography.

1) Group on-line or library activity: Divide the class into groups of two or three. Have the students research Marguerite Duras, the novel's author. Have the class compare their notes on the author and discuss what they find out about her life.

2) Short essay: Compare some points in the author's actual life to the background and events that are described in the opening segment of the novel.
