Scene One

• The following version of this book was used to create this lesson plan: Fugard, Athol. The Island. The Viking Press, 1976.

• Scene One begins on page 47.

• Scene One opens in a cell on Robben Island.

• On the floor of the cell are neatly folded blankets, “a bucket of water and two tin mugs” (47).

• A siren wails in the background.

• The stage lights reveal two uniformed prisoners with shaven heads: John and Winston.

• John and Winston are motioning as though they are digging sand.

• Each prisoner fills a wheelbarrow with sand, then pushes the heavy wheelbarrow to the other prisoner and empties it.

• The other prisoner now fills the wheelbarrow with sand, thus the task is never complete.

• They grunt as they dig, the wheelbarrow screeches as they move it, and Hodoshe, the green carrion fly buzzes.

• At the sound of a whistle, John and Winston stop and...
