Objective

The objective of this lesson is for students to understand the character of Tim Jamieson as revealed in the first part of the novel. Students will identify and analyze elements from the first part of the novel in order to create a character portrait of this character.

Tim Jamieson, the first character introduced, is integral to the novel. While he is not the protagonist of the novel, he will play a pivotal role in the protagonist’s journey and the novel’s conflicts.

Class Discussion: How does Tim present himself to the world? What words would you use to describe Tim? How does Tim show good judgment, and how does he show poor judgment? How does fate play a role in Tim’s decisions? What conflicts does he face? What do you think will happen to Tim as the novel progresses?
