Lesson 1 (from Chapter 1 – Chapter 5)

Objective

The objective of this lesson is for students to explore the exposition of the novel. Students will identify and analyze elements from the first five chapters of the novel in order to identify the main characters, the setting, and any potential conflicts and themes the story might contain.

The first few chapters of the novel introduce the reader to Alice Proserpine, her mother, Ella Proserpine, and her grandmother, Althea Proserpine. The reader is introduced to the bad luck that follows them as well as themes such as motherhood. Finally, readers are introduced to potential conflicts, such as Alice’s internal conflict regarding her anger and her conflict with Ella over Althea.
