Lesson

Lead the class in a discussion about Savannah. Begin with defining the city's geographical location. Ask the students about any current perceptions they have about the city. How have these changed from their perceptions prior to reading the book? How would the students characterize the city in one word? Do the students feel like they want to visit? Why or why not? Do any of the students feel like they would like to live there? Why or why not?

As an in-class exercise, have the students do some online research about Savannah at the time that Flannery O'Connor was born. What changes have been made in the areas of architecture, commerce, education, etc. They should then write an essay on what new...
