ARRESTS - In this chapter, the reader learns about the various arrests that took place while the Gulag prison camps were in use. The objective of this lesson is for students to explore the crimes that warranted arrest and imprisonment in Gulag, and to discuss the reactions from both the prisoners and their families.

Lesson

1.) As a class, create a list of crimes that warranted arrest and imprisonment in Gulag. Do you think the punishment fit the crime in these cases? Why or why not?

2.) As a class, compare/contrast the typical reaction of an arrested man with the reaction from his family. What is the same about these typical reactions? What is different? Is there anything unexpected/surprising in this comparison?

3.) Do you think the Gulag prison systems were needed to keep social order during the 1940s? Divide the class into two groups...
