This chapter introduces The Good Soldier's four main characters--John Dowell, Florence Dowell, Captain Edward Ashburnham, and Leonora Ashburnham--and their relationships. This lesson will familiarize students with the novel's four main characters and help to negotiate their love triangle.

Lesson

1. In-class writing assignment: Divide the class into four groups. Ask students in each group to write a short analysis on one of the novel's four main characters. Group one will write on John Dowell, group two on Florence Dowell, group three on Leonora Ashburnham and group four on Captain Edward Ashburnham. Each student should write his or her own analysis. In their analysis, ask students to summarize the information given about their assigned character, to identify the nature of the character's relationship with the other characters (for example, is Florence Dowell Edward Ashburnham's friend, enemy, spouse or lover?) and, lastly, ask students to assess the...
