Objective

Chapters 1-5: Early on in the book, the subject of drinking is brought to the forefront when it leads to Heather and Morag being sent to New York. In this respect, it appears that the author is saying a lot about the repercussions of drinking and hinting that it may play a similar role elsewhere in the book. The objective of this lesson is to examine the portrayal of drinking in the book.

Lesson

1. Group Activity: Divide the class into groups of four and create a list of ways that drinking negatively impacted Heather and Morag in the first chapter of the book, namely how it led to them being in New York. After your group completes the list, have one member share your findings with the rest of class.
