Character Descriptions

This section provides a short description of all the major characters in the book. Characters

Dr. Ruth Ngema - This character is the black, female doctor who is the head of the hospital.

Dr. Frank Eloff - This character is the middle-aged, embittered, apathetic veteran doctor who originally came to this hospital as another's replacement.

Dr. Laurence Waters - A young, idealistic doctor fresh out of medical school, this character has chosen to spend a year of community service at a rural hospital in order to make things hard on himself.

Maria - This is the black village woman who owns the souvenir shack.
