Preface and Chapter 1: The Story of Aristomenes

The setting and language of The Golden Ass is very different than what students experience today. In studying the setting and introducing the novel to the class, the students will be better equipped to proceed with the novel. The objective of this lesson is a study of the setting and the origins of the novel.

Lesson

1) Class Discussion: After having the class read the preface, lead a discussion with the class on the following: What is setting? When was the novel written? What do you know about this time period? Where did the author live? How is this important to the setting of the novel?

2) Group Activity: What is the main character's name? What language does he speak? Where is he? During which time period do you think the novel takes place?
