Lesson 1 (from Chapters 1 and 2)

Objective

THE DREAM--This chapter opens with Julia admitting to having a terrifying, recurring dream. She admits that she believes the dream will inevitably come true. The objective of this lesson is for students to explore the symbolism of the dream, and to discuss whether or not the dream may come true during the course of the novel.

Lesson

1) As a class, create a list of items or descriptions about the dream that stuck out to you as a reader. What was it that made this dream so powerful?

2) As a class, compare and contrast your reaction as a reader to the dream with Julia's reaction to the dream as the one experiencing it. Do you think that you would have had the same reaction to the dream that Julia has? Why or why not?

3) Do you believe that this recurring dream will come true, as Julia believes...
