The objective of this lesson is to examine setting and time period.

Lesson

1. Homework. Students will research China during the 12th century, especially as it concerns scholars, writing a short paper on the physical, cultural, governmental and economical aspects of the setting.

2. Class discussion. Could this novel had been set anywhere? Would most of the situations in "The Examination" have applied to any where in Europe in this era? How did the author make this setting unique? How did the setting affect the characters? The plot? The themes? Why is the setting important?

3. Group work. In groups students will research Chinese education in the present time and discuss the similarities and differences between the present and the 1100's listing the most importance differences and similarities to present to the class.
