1. Where are the Everglades located? Why is this important to this book?

They are the southernmost part of the United States, one degree away from the tropics. They lie below Lake Okeechobee, the second largest fresh water lake. This is important, because it reveals how unique and special the Everglades are and helps readers to understand what part of the U.S. this book will be discussing.

2. From where does the name 'Everglades' come? How is this similar to the Indian name? How are these names fitting for this region?

The name 'Everglades' first came into use in the early eighteen hundreds. The Indians referred to the area as Pahayoke, which meant Grassy Water. The Everglades begins at Lake Okeechobee, the Indians meaning of which is Big Water, and is approximately seven hundred fifty square miles. The area is covered with saw grass that extends for the one hundred miles between Lake Okeechobee to the Gulf of Mexico. It ranges in width from fifty to seventy miles. With so many miles of grass, both names are very fitting.
